Our usual starting point is 30-36 inches of post embedment, with the final depth checked for the fence system, soil and local requirements. Post embedment and total hole depth are different measurements. Confirm the installation detail before choosing post length or allowing for a gravel base.

For a 6-foot fence, begin with the chosen fence system's installation detail and check it against the site. Our usual 30-36-inch post depth is a planning reference, with the final depth confirmed for the ground and fence. Choose the post length after establishing that requirement.
There is a simple buying trap here: an 8-foot post with 6 feet above the ground leaves only 2 feet below it. A deeper empty hole does not make that post longer. Confirm the finished post height, embedment and any gravel allowance before ordering.
Two rules of thumb circulate and they disagree, which is the first thing worth knowing. The concrete manufacturers' guides describe a hole one third to one half of the above-ground height, so a six-foot fence gets a post roughly two to three feet in the ground, with extra depth for gravel under the post. The building code approach starts from the frost line instead: in the Kansas City area that is thirty-six inches, and a footing that stops above it gets pushed up a little each winter.
The fence system has its own say. A composite or vinyl manufacturer publishes the depth its posts need for its panel weight and wind load, and that number governs when it is deeper than the rule of thumb. The honest answer for a six-foot fence in this region is usually the deepest of the three - the system's depth, the frost line , the rule of thumb - and a quote that names its depth in inches is a quote you can hold to.

What holds a fence up is the part below grade: embedment, hole width and the footing detail. Illustration only.
Two feet may be enough for some fence designs and sites, but it is not a reliable default for every privacy fence. Loose soil, wind exposure and frost conditions can require a different footing. Check the specific product instructions and local requirements before accepting a 24-inch detail.
Trex Fencing FDS makes this distinction in its depth guidance: a 6-foot privacy fence may need more than 24 inches. That is product guidance worth checking against your selected system, rather than a reason to assign the same depth to every material.
It can be, for a short open fence on stable ground in a place with a shallow frost line . It is not a default. The manufacturers' own answer to the question is a qualified no for a six-foot privacy fence, because the wind load on a solid panel and the leverage of a tall post both want more embedment, and because two feet stops well above the frost line across most of Missouri and Kansas .
Where a two-foot post fails, it fails slowly: a slight lean after the first winter, a gate that no longer latches, a panel that binds. By the time the lean is obvious the concrete is cured and the fix is a new hole. The frost-depth map and the code's frost line are the cheap check; the post-setting guides describe the footing that goes with the deeper hole.

Post depth is how far the post extends below finished ground level. Hole depth reaches the bottom of the excavation. A gravel layer beneath the post makes those measurements different. Ask for both dimensions so a deeper hole is not mistaken for additional post embedment.
For example, 30 inches of post embedment above a 6-inch gravel layer calls for a 36-inch hole. This is an arithmetic example, not a specification for your yard. QUIKRETE's general setting- posts guide separately adds its gravel allowance to a depth based on the overall post length.
No, and the difference is a few inches that matter. Post depth is how far the post itself sits below finished grade. Hole depth is the post depth plus whatever sits under the post - the concrete manufacturers call for several inches of gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage, so the post does not stand in water. A quote that says thirty-six inches should say whether that is the post or the hole.
Both numbers belong on the estimate , with the hole diameter beside them. The guides describe a hole about three times the post width, which for a four-inch post is a twelve-inch hole, and that width is what gives the concrete collar its strength. A narrow hole dug with a small auger and packed with concrete looks the same from above and does not hold the same.

Frost conditions belong in the footing decision, but this article cannot assign one frost depth to every Missouri or Kansas address. Follow the fence manufacturer's instructions and the requirements applicable to your site. Where the approved detail requires deeper placement for frost protection, a general rule of thumb cannot replace it.
Trex Fencing FDS explicitly ties its hole depth to local codes and frost lines. In Kansas City , Missouri , the city's code questions page also explains that work must meet applicable requirements even when a building permit is not required. Use the office responsible for your actual address.
For a fence that is meant to stay straight, yes, where the ground freezes. Frost heave is water in the soil freezing, expanding and lifting whatever sits above it; a post whose footing sits inside that zone is lifted and dropped every winter, and the movement accumulates. The Kansas City residential code sets its frost line at thirty-six inches, the state map shows depths varying across Missouri , and the concrete guides say the same thing in their own words - go below the frost, then add gravel.
The article cannot assign one depth to every property, because the frost line and the soil both change across the region. What it can say is that the depth on the quote should be a decision, made for the address, and that the cheap way to check it is to ask what frost line the estimator used.

Hole width is part of the footing design, alongside depth and post size. QUIKRETE's general setting- posts guide uses a hole diameter three times the post diameter. A manufactured fence system may specify its own dimensions, so use the detail for that system rather than choosing an auger by convenience.
Write down both dimensions when comparing proposals. Two contractors can describe the same depth while allowing different amounts of concrete around the post. The useful question is which footing detail each is quoting and why it fits the site.
Width is the other half of the footing. The concrete manufacturers describe a hole about three times the width of the post, so a four-by-four gets roughly a twelve-inch hole and a six-by-six gate post gets more. The reason is the concrete collar: it is the collar's width, bearing against undisturbed soil , that resists the lever of a tall fence in wind. A hole barely wider than the post gives a thin sleeve of concrete that cracks and lets the post rock.
Gravel at the bottom, concrete crowned at the top so water sheds away from the post, and the post held plumb and braced while the concrete sets are the details that go with the width. None of them shows in a finished fence, which is exactly why they should be written on the estimate.

Gate posts need a detail matched to the gate and its hardware; do not assume the line-post detail is sufficient. The hinge post supports a moving gate, and some systems require reinforcement. Confirm the opening, gate weight, post specification and footing together before the holes are dug.
For example, Trex Fencing FDS identifies a gate hinge post as an exception to its usual self-supporting post guidance. That illustrates why material-specific instructions matter. It does not establish a universal extra depth or a reinforcement rule for every wood , vinyl or metal gate.
Gate posts need more. A gate is a lever hung from one post, and everything about that post - its size, its depth, its concrete - is sized to the gate, not to the fence beside it. The manufacturers' gate guides call for larger or reinforced hinge posts, deeper embedment and a wider concrete collar, and for a double drive gate they ask the same of both posts.
The tell of a gate post set like a line post is a gate that sags within a season and a latch that stops meeting its keeper. Ask the estimate for the gate post size and depth as separate items from the line posts. If they are the same number, ask why.

Depth is one part of a sound installation. Drainage, alignment, the selected footing detail and curing matter too. Our process includes a compacted gravel base, checking the post on two faces with a four-foot level, and bracing it while the footing cures before hanging panels.
Ask how those steps will be checked while the work is visible. A finished fence photo can show alignment and appearance, but it cannot tell you the dimensions of a buried footing. That information belongs in the installation discussion before the ground is closed.
Drainage is the first: gravel under the post and a concrete crown that sheds water keep the base of the post from standing wet, which is where posts rot. The post itself is the second: treated wood for ground contact carries the industry's UC4A rating, and a post rated only for above-ground use will fail at the soil line while the pickets above it are still sound. Alignment is the third - a line pulled tight between corner posts, each post plumb in two directions, braced until the concrete cures.
Then the framework above the footing. The fence institute's product manual for chain-link and the manufacturers' guides for wood , vinyl and composite each describe post spacing and rail attachment for their systems, and the depth only does its job when the rest of the structure matches it.

Arrange utility locates before digging and follow the process for the state where the property sits. Missouri 811 asks for at least three full working days of notice; Kansas 811 requires at least two. Confirm utility responses and markings, and resolve outstanding locate issues before excavation begins.
The state line changes the request process, even within the Kansas City area. Kansas 811's guide also limits routine advance notice to 20 calendar days before work. Use the start information supplied for your ticket, account for excluded holidays, and check whether private lines need separate locating.
Request the utility locate, and request it early. In Missouri the law requires notice to Missouri 811 at least three working days before digging and no more than ten, and the utilities have two working days to mark. In Kansas the request goes to Kansas 811 with a two-working-day lead time. Both are free, both can be placed online, and both mark only public lines - a wire to a detached garage, a sprinkler feed or a septic lateral is yours to point out, and posts near any line get dug by hand.
Then confirm where the fence goes. Survey pins, a licensed survey where the pins are missing, the address's height rules and any subdivision approval are the rest of the pre-dig list, and every item on it is cheaper than moving a post after the concrete has set.

Ask any crew in mid-Missouri what stops a post hole and they will give you the same list in the same order: rock, roots, old concrete, and fill nobody told us about. Shelf rock is the honest one. It shows up two feet down, the auger rings, and the plan changes right there in the yard. Sometimes that means a rock bit, sometimes a different footing, occasionally a post moved eighteen inches so the line still runs true. All of it is normal. What is not normal is finding out about it from an invoice.
Roots are the sneaky one. A mature silver maple will send a root the thickness of your forearm forty feet from the trunk, and it will sit exactly where the post wants to go. We do not cut through anything structural on a tree somebody loves without asking first, so that becomes a two-minute conversation in the yard about moving the post or accepting a shallower one with a wider footing.
Then there is fill. Newer subdivisions and anywhere a pool or a pond went in are full of it, and fill lies to an auger: it digs fast and feels great, and it holds a post about as well as loose gravel. When we find it we go deeper, wider, or both, because a post in fill at the standard depth will lean and there is no way to fix that later without pulling it.
The frost line is the part people argue about and it is the least arguable. Around Kansas City the code puts it near thirty-six inches. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts anything sitting in that zone, a little every winter, and it never puts it back. A post that stops at two feet in this region is a post that will move. Not might. Will. The only question is whether it takes two winters or five.
So when a quote lists a depth, read it as a decision somebody made about your ground, and ask what they expect to hit. If the answer is specific to your address, you are talking to somebody who has dug there. If it is a number with no reasoning behind it, you are talking to somebody who is about to find out.

Every fence post carries wind. A gate post carries wind plus a swinging weight hanging off one side of it, all day, for years. That is a different problem, and it is why a gate post is bigger, deeper and set in a wider hole than the line posts beside it. When somebody tells us their gate sags, the gate is almost never the problem. The post moved.
The rule we work to is simple: a walk gate gets a heavier post than the line, a drive gate gets a heavier post again, and anything over about six feet of leaf gets steel or a reinforced post rather than a four-by-four. On a double drive gate both posts get that treatment, because both of them are carrying a leaf and the drop rod in the middle is not structure.
Depth follows the same logic. If the line posts are going to thirty-six inches, the gate posts go deeper, and the hole gets wider so the concrete collar bears against more undisturbed soil . This is the one place where we will happily spend an extra bag of concrete and twenty minutes, because it is the one failure that annoys somebody every single day.
The last piece is what the gate hangs on. Hinges rated for the weight, bolted through rather than screwed into end grain, and a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge corner up to the latch corner so the leaf is in compression instead of slowly folding. Ask any contractor which way the brace runs. If they have to think about it, keep asking questions.

Ask for the actual post embedment, total hole depth, hole width, drainage detail and any different treatment at gates or corners. Then ask what could change after the site is examined. Those answers make a proposal useful and help you compare the construction behind the finished appearance.

Ask for numbers, in inches: post embedment, total hole depth, hole width, the gravel depth under the post, and whether corner and gate posts get a different detail. Ask what frost line the estimate assumes and where that figure came from. Ask what the post is rated for if it is wood , and what the manufacturer specifies if it is vinyl or composite . Ask how long the posts are braced before panels go on.
A contractor who can answer those from the estimate has already decided them. One who cannot will decide them with an auger running, and the fence will tell you which it was in about two winters.
