A leaning fence can have deteriorated posts, moving foundations or failed connections. Sometimes only the gate or panel has dropped while the posts remain upright. Start by identifying which part changed; straightening the top of the fence does not, by itself, explain or fix the cause.

Keep people and pets away from a section that could fall. Do not push, climb or pull it to see how loose it is, and do not rely on an attached gate to hold it upright. A fence that contains a pool or keeps an animal away from a road needs a secure alternative while the problem is assessed.
You can gather useful information without testing the structure. From a safe position, photograph the whole run and the affected area. Record when you first noticed the lean, whether it appeared suddenly, and any recent storm, impact or nearby work. If it is threatening a public path, vehicle or building, arrange prompt professional attention.
Look along the fence from both ends where you can do so safely. Is a post visibly out of vertical, or are the boards and rails dropping between posts that appear upright? Is the change limited to one bay, or does a longer run lean together? Treat these as observations to share, not proof of what is happening underground.
Photograph the rail-to-post connections and any visible gaps, split wood or detached fasteners. A loose connection and a moving foundation call for different work. Reattaching a panel will not solve a failing post, and replacing sound posts may not address an isolated panel connection. An assessment should identify which parts can still carry their intended loads.
Simpson Strong-Tie's fence-repair example shows a leaning wood fence with deteriorated post bottoms. That is one documented cause, not a diagnosis of every leaning fence. A post can look better higher up than it does at ground level, so photographs of the exposed base are useful alongside a picture of the full fence.
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that wood -decay fungi need suitable moisture, temperature and oxygen. Discoloration alone does not establish the extent of decay or the remaining strength of a post. Ask the person assessing the fence to distinguish surface appearance from material deterioration and to explain what additional inspection is needed before choosing a repair.

Note visible changes around the base: displaced soil, an exposed footing, standing water or a new drainage path. Tell the assessor about recent grading, excavation or changes in runoff. These details help frame the investigation ; they do not prove that rain, soil movement or frost caused this particular lean.
Master Halco's PostMaster+ instructions explain that installation depends on soil conditions and that spacing varies with local conditions and wind exposure. They also discuss proper below-frost-line installation for driven posts . Those are instructions for that system, not a universal depth for every Missouri or Kansas fence. Ask which requirements apply to your actual posts, fence height and site.

If the problem is beside a gate, photograph the gate closed from a safe distance and note where its gaps have changed. Does the latch no longer line up? Does the gate appear to have changed shape, or does the hinge-side post lean with it? Avoid repeatedly operating a gate that is dragging or attached to a visibly unstable post.
Ask whether the proposed work addresses the hinges, the gate frame, the supporting post or a combination. Adjusting a latch may make a gate close temporarily without explaining why its alignment changed. The useful outcome is a gate and supporting structure that work together, with the cause and the limits of the repair explained in writing .
Ask for a description of the damaged components before comparing prices. A proposal should identify what will be removed, what will remain and how the retained sections will connect to the repaired area. If surrounding posts or rails are also deteriorated, a narrow repair and a longer replacement are different scopes, even when both are described as fixing the lean.
Repair hardware has product-specific applications and installation instructions. Simpson Strong-Tie's example uses its E-Z Mender system; it does not establish that a similar bracket suits every fence. Have the assessor explain why a proposed method fits the actual damage and supporting conditions. A photograph cannot establish that compatibility, and this example does not identify a product supplied by GYFO.

Save an overview photo, a safe view of the exposed post bases and connections , and a picture of any affected gate. Add the approximate fence age if known, material, affected length and date the change appeared. Older photographs can help show whether the lean is new or gradual. Label anything you are unsure about instead of turning a guess into a fact.
Explain what the fence must do: contain a dog, provide privacy, protect access or serve another purpose. Include any immediate access problem. Keep this record separate from the proposed solution so the person inspecting the fence can assess the cause before being asked to quote a particular bracket, post or replacement length.
Before agreeing to work, ask what caused the movement, what evidence supports that conclusion and which parts of the fence remain serviceable . Request a clear explanation of the proposed foundation and connection work, any uncertainty that will only be resolved during removal, and how a change in scope would be discussed with you.
