Pettis County is claypan country. The topsoil is thin and the clay under it swells when it is wet and shrinks hard when it is dry, so a post set shallow in a wet April can be leaning by August. Sedalia yards run from tight older lots near downtown to acreage on the edge of town, and the wind has a clear shot across most of them. A six foot privacy fence out here is a sail. We talk about post spacing and panel style with the gusts in mind, not as if this were a sheltered cul-de-sac.

In town it is cedar and vinyl privacy, usually six foot, with chain-link for the dog yards. On the acreage lots it turns into board fence and long chain-link runs where a dead-straight line matters more than anything ornamental. Both are fine work; they are different jobs.
